What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a common, chronic condition that affects between one and two percent of the population. While the cause of this condition is unknown, it leads to an immune response that causes skin cells to multiple up to 10 times faster than normal. This causes itchy patches of scaly skin to develop. These most commonly appear on the knees, elbows, and scalp, but can crop up anywhere on the body.
While this condition is incurable, a number of effective treatment options exist that can help patients manage and minimize the severity of their symptoms. At Integrated Dermatology of Coral Gables, we prescribe our patients either topical, biological, or laser treatments for psoriasis.
When it comes to psoriasis, topical medications are usually the first line of defense when managing symptoms. These treatments can help normalize or slow down the excessive cell production that is characteristic of psoriasis, reducing inflammation. Depending on each patient’s individual case, different topical treatments are administered.
Biological treatments are typically used in moderate to severe cases of psoriasis, or cases of psoriasis that affect three percent or more of the body. These drugs work by suppressing the immune system with the goal of stopping the immune response that causes psoriasis.
While these drugs are usually very effective in dealing with psoriasis symptoms, they can often take a toll on the body. Suppressing the immune system can put patients at an increased risk of infection and illness. Because of this, this treatment is usually not prescribed to patients that have a history of a weak immune system.
The XTRAC® is an FDA-approved excimer laser that uses concentrated beams of light to treat the active lesions caused by psoriasis. This procedure offers a shorter treatment time than biological and topical treatment options and is often a successful alternative when these treatment methods don’t work. The treatment takes between 5-30 minutes and is relatively well-tolerated by patients.
