What is IPL?
IPL, or intense pulsed light therapy, is a non-ablative, non-invasive treatment that uses high-intensity pulses of light to improve the overall appearance of the skin. It is particularly well-suited to improve redness and discoloration.
How Does it Work?
IPL works in much the same way that laser therapy does. In both cases, light is used to stimulate healing in different structures of the skin. Depending upon the wavelength — or color — of this light, different structures of the skin absorb it and are affected by it.
The difference between IPL and laser therapy lies in the wavelength of light that each uses. Laser therapy typically uses just one frequency of light in a concentrated beam, while IPL delivers several wavelengths in a series of pulses. This enables the treatment to target the wide variety of skin structures responsible for a variety of skin problems, including discoloration, age marks, freckles, wrinkles, and acne.
What are the Benefits of IPL?
IPL has a number of unique benefits that other treatments of its kind do not. While many laser treatments deliver harsh wavelengths of light that can harm the surface of the skin, the light delivered during treatment passes easily through the topmost layer of the skin. This decreases downtime dramatically and makes the procedure more comfortable and easily tolerated.
Another advantage of IPL is the wide range of skin problems it can address. Some of these include:
- Vascular lesions
- Pigmented lesions
- Moderate facial lines and wrinkles
- Stretch marks
- Freckles and age marks
And once you leave our office after receiving treatment, you can get right back to your daily routine! This is because IPL treatments involve absolutely no downtime.
Am I a Candidate?
Almost anyone interested in improving the appearance of mild skin pigmentation, fine lines or facial marks is a good candidate for IPL therapy. However, individuals with severe versions of these issues should seek out a more aggressive treatment. IPL also does not work well on people with darker skin tones or tanned skin.
IPL is a great way for patients with minor aesthetic skin issues to get easy, downtime-free correction. Contact us today for more information about this exciting treatment or to schedule a consultation appointment.
